I think it’s fascinating how Greek Life offers college students the opportunity to organize  themselves into neat little categories.

At my school there are six active fraternities and sororities, three of each, with one of the fraterinities being co-ed. Each one has a different membership archetype, ranging from “nice and friendly” to “outspoken and eccentric” to “most likely to commit date-rape.” These archetypes affect the reputations of the different Greek organizations on campus which in turn attracts different types of people to rush.

I figure this is why the vast majority of my friends that rushed this semester ended up pledging to the same fraternity and sorority. It’s as if that fraternity and that sorority aren’t just named after Greek letters but in fact have the subtitle “THESE ARE THE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO GET TO KNOW,” while the other fraternities/sororities on campus are just like “HERP DERP LET’S GET HELLA DRUNK AND BRO OUT.”

I know that people are multi-faceted and that it’s horribly ignorant to summarize a person’s entire personality with a single word…but the more I learn about who joined which fraternity/sorority and what each of them did for Rush Week, the more accurate their reputation becomes.

It’s been the most effective self-selecting friend identification process I have ever encountered.
